How to bring a high chargeback ratio down
- Find the causesGroup the last few months of disputes by reason code and fix the biggest group first.
- Stop fraud before it shipsScreen orders and hold the risky ones for review.
- Act on early fraud warningsRefund unshipped orders that get one when the refund costs less than a dispute.
- Make the charge recognizableUse the store name customers know in your statement descriptor.
- Track it weeklyPer processor, with the chargeback ratio calculator, and write the fixes into a chargeback reduction plan.
What can happen, in order
- Your processor or acquirer acts first. Acquirers can set stricter limits than the networks; Visa's acquirer portfolio thresholds start at 0.5%. On Shopify Payments, elevated chargeback activity is one reason Shopify can hold part of your payouts as a reserve, for example 10% of each transaction for 120 days.
- Card network monitoring. Visa's merchant Excessive level is 1.5% with at least 1,500 fraud reports plus disputes a month in most regions; Mastercard's ECM level is 1.5% with at least 100 chargebacks. Stripe and Shopify list Mastercard ECM fines of $1,000 in months 2 and 3 and $5,000 plus an issuer recovery assessment in months 4 to 6.
- Termination and MATCH. Acquirers must report merchants they terminate for excessive chargebacks to Mastercard's MATCH or Visa's VMSS, and a listing stays for 5 years.
Example: a growing store in Q4
A store doubles its orders in November to 4,000 and receives 52 disputes, a 1.3% ratio. That is below Visa's and Mastercard's 1.5% merchant levels, but processors and card networks start flagging stores at around 1% of orders disputed, and a sudden volume surge is itself one of the factors Shopify names for reserves. Fixing the top reason code before December matters more than the network minimums.
Where Verdikx fits
On every plan, Verdikx works out your 30-day dispute-to-order ratio daily, store-wide and per processor, and alerts you as it rises; it is an early warning, not the official VAMP or ECM figure. On Growth and up, order screening scores each new order and holds risky ones before they ship, so fewer fraud disputes reach the ratio.
More questions
How long does Mastercard keep a merchant in its chargeback program?
Mastercard removes a merchant after 3 consecutive months below the threshold, according to the Stripe and Shopify documentation on its Excessive Chargeback Program. Fines rise the longer a merchant stays in, so the months right after a spike matter most.
Does a high chargeback ratio mean my account will be closed?
Not straight away. Processors and networks usually start with monitoring, fees, a reserve or a remediation plan; termination comes at the end, not the start. Payouts can be held along the way, so act on the first warning.
