How Stripe disputes work
When a cardholder disputes a charge, Stripe notifies you and debits the disputed amount plus a dispute fee from your balance; the funds are held for the whole dispute. Stripe facilitates the case but does not decide it: the cardholder's bank does.
- Fees (US): a $15 dispute received fee, which is not returned, and since June 17, 2025 a $15 dispute countered fee when you submit evidence, which is returned if you win. Fees differ by country; check Stripe's pricing for yours.
- Deadline: usually 7 to 21 days to respond, depending on the card network.
- Decision: the issuer usually takes 60 to 75 days to decide; the whole lifecycle can take 2 to 3 months.
- Inquiries: a pre-dispute phase used mostly by American Express and Discover. You can resolve it without a dispute fee by answering with evidence or refunding in full. Unanswered inquiries can escalate into unwinnable chargebacks.
- Early fraud warnings (EFWs): issuer fraud reports on Visa, Mastercard and JCB. Stripe says about 40% of Visa and Mastercard EFWs become fraud disputes if not refunded, and that refunding is usually worthwhile only on charges at or below roughly your dispute fee.
What Verdikx connects
Verdikx is a fraud, chargeback and dispute platform for e-commerce and SaaS merchants, built by Verdikx LLC (New Jersey, United States). The Stripe connection is live, exercised end to end with a real account.
- One sign-in. Click Connect Stripe, approve access in Stripe and you are done. There is no webhook to set up.
- Automatic import. Open Stripe disputes import and their status and deadlines stay up to date. Verdikx matches each dispute to its Shopify order where the charge carries an order reference; otherwise you link the order in a click or build the packet from Stripe's records.
- Submission from the case. Evidence goes to Stripe only when you click Submit to Stripe and confirm (packet up to 4.5 MB). Verdikx never accepts a dispute for you.
- Visa Compelling Evidence 3.0. For Visa 10.4 fraud disputes that Stripe marks eligible, Verdikx adds the CE 3.0 data when two prior undisputed charges on the same card qualify. See Compelling Evidence 3.0.
- Early fraud warnings with auto-refund policies. Stripe EFWs land in Verdikx's prevention inbox, and you can set a policy to refund them automatically (for example, below an amount you choose). See early fraud warnings.
- Autopilot. Stripe cases can be auto-submitted inside the limits you set, 48 hours before the deadline by default. See Autopilot.
Plan and requirements
On a Shopify store, Stripe disputes are included with Growth ($79/month) and Pro ($199/month), each with a 7-day trial; yearly billing saves 20%. Merchants not on Shopify (for example a SaaS business billing through Stripe, or a store on another platform) sign up on verdikx.com, choose what they sell on and pay by card; in a workspace on verdikx.com, Stripe is the store's own processor and is included on every plan.
Good to know
- One response. Stripe forwards your evidence once; you can't edit it or add files afterwards, so gather everything first.
- Withdrawn disputes. If a customer says they've withdrawn a dispute, Stripe says you still need to submit evidence for it to close in your favor. A withdrawn dispute doesn't resolve faster and still counts toward your dispute rate.
- Refunds. You can't refund a disputed charge outside the dispute process while it is open. A refund doesn't remove an early fraud warning unless it is processed as a reversal, which usually happens within 2 hours of capture.
- Radar is Stripe's fraud screening: it screens payment attempts in real time, and its Standard, Plus and Pro plans charge a fee for each screened transaction. It targets fraud, so it doesn't answer not-received or not-as-described disputes.
- Klarna payments follow Klarna's process: most Klarna disputes start as a 21-day inquiry in which Klarna accepts no evidence, then escalate to a chargeback with 12 calendar days to respond (5 for fraud), and Klarna decides.
- Stripe does not support the arbitration phase, so neither can Verdikx.
- Card-network alerts (Visa RDR, Mastercard Ethoca) are coming soon, not live.
- Outcomes are decided by the issuer; Verdikx does not guarantee wins.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Stripe charge for a dispute?
In the US, Stripe charges a $15 dispute received fee that is not returned, plus a $15 dispute countered fee when you submit evidence, which is returned if you win (not on a partial win). Fees vary by country, and the counter fee does not apply in Mexico and Japan.
How long do I have to respond to a Stripe dispute?
Usually 7 to 21 days, depending on the card network. The exact due date is on each dispute, and Verdikx keeps it updated on the case. After you submit, the issuer usually decides within 60 to 75 days.
Do I need to set up a Stripe webhook for Verdikx?
No. Connecting is a single Stripe sign-in (Connect Stripe, then approve access). Verdikx imports your open disputes and keeps their status and deadlines up to date automatically. Disconnecting later keeps the disputes already imported.
Can Verdikx refund Stripe early fraud warnings automatically?
Yes, on Growth and Pro. Stripe early fraud warnings appear in Verdikx's prevention inbox once Stripe is connected, and you can set an auto-refund policy. Stripe suggests refunding mainly charges at or below roughly your dispute fee, so set limits deliberately.
Can I use Verdikx for Stripe without Shopify?
Yes. Sign up on verdikx.com, choose Just disputes from my processors (or your platform), pay by card and connect Stripe from Connections. Stripe disputes are included on every plan for these workspaces, and Visa Compelling Evidence 3.0 and early fraud warnings work the same way.
