How PayPal disputes work
PayPal has its own process, separate from card networks, with three things merchants usually call a "PayPal dispute":
- Dispute (inquiry stage). A buyer can dispute a transaction within 180 days of the payment date. The buyer and seller then have up to 20 days to resolve it, typically in the Resolution Center. A dispute closes automatically after 20 days unless it is escalated.
- Claim. Either party can escalate to a claim, and PayPal reviews evidence from both sides. PayPal says merchants have 10 days to respond to a claim, or it closes in the customer's favor. PayPal usually decides within about 14 days, though complex cases can take 30 days or longer.
- Chargeback. If the buyer paid with a card and goes to their card issuer instead, it becomes a chargeback. The bank, not PayPal, makes the final decision.
PayPal also sends pre-chargeback alerts, and its developer docs describe a short window to refund and avoid the chargeback entirely. Timelines vary by case type and region, so check the case in your PayPal account.
Status: coming soon
Verdikx is a fraud, chargeback and dispute platform for e-commerce and SaaS merchants, built by Verdikx LLC (New Jersey, United States). The direct PayPal connection is built and opening to merchants soon. When it opens (on Growth and Pro):
- You will sign in with PayPal and approve the dispute permissions.
- Inquiries, claims and chargebacks will import automatically and keep updating; PayPal inquiries will also appear as prevention alerts.
- You will submit reviewed evidence to PayPal from the case (packet up to 10 MB). Submitting never accepts the claim or refunds the buyer.
What works today
- Email forwarding (every plan). Forward PayPal chargeback and dispute notices to your private Verdikx address; Verdikx recognizes PayPal notices and turns them into cases, keeping PDF and image attachments as evidence.
- CSV import (every plan). Upload a dispute report exported from PayPal; Verdikx detects the columns or lets you map them.
- Link the order. Link each case to its Shopify order so the packet includes order, shipping, refund and conversation records. You then submit the packet in PayPal's Resolution Center and mark the case as sent.
Shopify stores taking PayPal: where Shopify Payments offers PayPal Wallet, Shopify manages those disputes, and once a dispute is open you can issue only a full refund. Disputes on legacy PayPal Express Checkout orders are managed in PayPal's Business Center, so use forwarding or CSV for those today. See Shopify Payments chargebacks.
Shopify stores install the Verdikx app; merchants on other platforms create a workspace on verdikx.com and pay by card. Until the PayPal connection opens, forward PayPal chargeback notices to your Verdikx address.
Evidence that helps in PayPal cases
For item not received, tracking that shows delivery to the address on the PayPal transaction. For significantly not as described, the listing, photos and your return policy as shown at checkout. For unauthorized card chargebacks, prior undisputed orders and customer communication. See item not received disputes and friendly fraud.
Good to know
Verdikx does not decide PayPal claims or bank chargebacks and does not guarantee outcomes. It never accepts a claim or refunds a buyer for you.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a PayPal dispute and a claim?
A dispute is the first stage, where the buyer and seller try to resolve the issue directly, usually within 20 days. If they can't, either side can escalate it to a claim, and PayPal reviews evidence from both and decides. A dispute closes automatically after 20 days unless escalated.
How long do I have to respond to a PayPal claim?
PayPal says merchants have 10 days to respond to a claim; if they don't, it closes in the customer's favor. PayPal usually decides within about 14 days, but some cases take 30 days or longer. Check each case in PayPal for its exact dates.
Is a PayPal chargeback different from a PayPal claim?
Yes. A claim is decided by PayPal under its own process. A chargeback happens when a buyer who paid by card asks their card issuer to reverse the charge; the bank decides it under card-network rules, and PayPal relays the case to you.
Can Verdikx handle PayPal disputes today?
Yes, by email or CSV. The direct PayPal connection is built and opening to merchants soon. Today you can forward PayPal notices to your Verdikx address or upload a CSV on any plan; Verdikx builds the packet and you submit it in PayPal, then mark it sent.
Which plan will include the PayPal connection?
The PayPal connection is included with Growth ($79/month) and Pro ($199/month) once it opens. Email forwarding and CSV import of PayPal notices are available on every plan, including Starter at $29/month.
