How Braintree disputes work
Braintree (a PayPal service) groups disputes into three kinds:
- Retrieval: a request for information about a charge the cardholder doesn't recognize. Funds are not removed and Braintree does not charge a fee for it, but answer it: a clear response can stop a chargeback.
- Chargeback: the cardholder disputed the transaction with their bank. The amount is debited from your account until the case is resolved, and a chargeback fee applies whether you accept or lose (the amount varies by country and pricing).
- Pre-arbitration (pre-arb): the merchant won the chargeback and the cardholder disputed it a second time. Braintree notes merchants rarely win these without new, compelling evidence.
Every case has a reply-by date in the Braintree Control Panel; at 12am on that date you lose the opportunity to submit evidence. Through Braintree's API, a merchant adds text or file evidence and then finalizes the dispute, and Braintree sends the response to the cardholder's bank. Braintree includes its own AVS and CVV check results with your claim. If you win, Braintree says funds should return within 2 to 3 business days.
What Verdikx connects
Verdikx is a fraud, chargeback and dispute platform for e-commerce and SaaS merchants, built by Verdikx LLC (New Jersey, United States). The Braintree connection is in beta: fully built and supported, and we work closely with every merchant who connects it.
- API key connection. Enter your Merchant ID, Public key and Private key, choose Production or Sandbox, and Verdikx checks the keys with a live call before saving them (stored encrypted, never shown again).
- Dispute import. Braintree disputes import into Disputes → Cases, sorted by deadline, with the reply-by date on each case. Add Braintree's webhook (optional) for live status updates.
- Order matching. Verdikx links each dispute to its Shopify order where the transaction carries an order reference, so the packet includes order, shipping and refund records.
- Submission from the case. Click Submit to Braintree and confirm; the reviewed response and PDF packet (up to 4 MB) go to Braintree. Verdikx never accepts a dispute for you.
- Autopilot. Braintree cases can be auto-submitted inside the limits you set, 48 hours before the deadline by default.
Plan and requirements
Braintree disputes are included with Growth ($79/month) and Pro ($199/month), each with a 7-day trial. Shopify stores install the Verdikx app; merchants not on Shopify create a workspace on verdikx.com, pay by card and connect Braintree from Connections.
Good to know
- Without the optional webhook, status updates arrive on Verdikx's sync schedule rather than instantly.
- Packets over 4 MB must be trimmed (remove large uploads and rebuild).
- Outcomes are decided by the issuing bank; Verdikx does not guarantee wins.
Evidence that tends to matter
For fraud claims, AVS and CVV matches, device and IP consistency, and prior undisputed orders from the same customer. For item not received, carrier tracking to the verified address. For pre-arbitration, only new information is worth sending.

Frequently asked questions
What is a Braintree reply-by date?
It is the deadline Braintree shows for each chargeback, retrieval or pre-arb in the Control Panel. At 12am on that date you lose the opportunity to submit evidence. Verdikx shows the deadline on each imported case so you can respond in time.
Does Braintree charge a fee for retrievals?
No. Braintree says retrievals do not remove funds and carry no fee. Chargebacks do: the amount is debited and a chargeback fee applies whether you accept or lose. Fee amounts vary by country and pricing, so check your Braintree agreement.
Should I fight a Braintree pre-arbitration?
Only with new evidence. A pre-arb means you won the chargeback and the cardholder disputed again. Braintree notes merchants rarely win pre-arbs without new, compelling evidence, and a fee may apply regardless of outcome.
Is the Verdikx Braintree connection live?
It is in beta. Beta connections are fully built and supported, and are now opening to their first merchants, so we work closely with every merchant who connects one. Shopify Payments, Stripe and email, CSV and API intake are generally available. You connect with your own API keys on Growth or Pro.
Can Autopilot submit Braintree disputes automatically?
Yes, if you turn it on. Autopilot can auto-submit Braintree cases inside the amount and evidence limits you set, 48 hours before the deadline by default. You can cancel a scheduled submission or switch Autopilot to drafts only at any time.
