American Express reason code R13:
No Reply

Amex R13 means American Express did not receive your reply to its inquiry within the time frame, usually 20 days, or received it late. The only rebuttals are proof you replied on time or proof of an offsetting credit. Most R13 losses come from inquiries that were never noticed or routed.

What American Express R13 means

The chargeback exists only because the inquiry went unanswered, intentionally or not. If you agree credit is due, Amex suggests replying by the due date with authorization for a chargeback instead.

Common causes

  • Inquiry notices sent to an unmonitored email or portal
  • Processor inquiry status (for example Stripe's warning_needs_response) not watched
  • Reply uploaded after the due date

Evidence that answers it

  • Proof you responded to the original inquiry within the time frame (submission receipt, timestamp)
  • Proof of an offsetting credit

How to prevent it

  • Route every Amex and processor dispute notice to one monitored queue
  • Set reminders well before the 20-day reply date
  • If you will not contest, reply with chargeback authorization or refund, rather than staying silent

How Verdikx helps with R13

Verdikx puts every imported dispute in one queue sorted by deadline, with 72-hour and 24-hour reminders, and Autopilot can submit inside limits you set (48 hours before the deadline by default). Forwarded notices from any processor become cases too.

Is American Express R13 worth fighting?

Our reference rates R13 (No Reply) usually one to accept: a response rarely changes the outcome. The evidence that answers it starts with proof you responded to the original inquiry within the time frame (submission receipt, timestamp). The cardholder's bank decides the outcome.

How long does a cardholder have to file a American Express R13 chargeback?

Usually 120 days from the transaction date, under the network's issuer time limits for most codes. Your processor gives you far less time to respond, so work from the due date on the case.
