How RDR works
- A Visa cardholder contacts their bank to dispute a charge.
- Before a chargeback is created, the case is sent to RDR.
- Verifi's decision engine checks it against the rules you configured, using transaction attributes such as amount or dispute category.
- If a rule matches, the case is accepted and a credit is issued to the cardholder through the Visa network and your acquirer. No chargeback is filed.
- If no rule matches, Verifi says the case is declined (status code 957) and the issuer can proceed with a normal chargeback.
Verifi says RDR is available to all global Visa issuers without technical changes on their side, and that decisions happen in real time.
Why merchants use it
- Ratio protection. Verifi's FAQ states RDR disputes and pre-disputes do not count against the dispute ratio. That matters for merchants near monitoring thresholds.
- No chargeback fee or evidence work on cases you would not fight anyway.
- Speed. The cardholder is credited quickly, which removes the reason to escalate.
The trade-off
RDR is a refund: you give up the sale on every matching case, including ones you could have won. Rules that are too broad turn RDR into an expensive auto-refund machine. Providers also charge per resolved case, so check the per-case price against your chargeback fee and win rate.
A worked example
A merchant averages a $35 order and pays a $15 chargeback fee. It wins about a third of fraud disputes, but each response costs staff time. It sets an RDR rule to accept fraud and "not recognized" disputes under $60, and to decline everything else. A $40 fraud dispute is refunded instantly and never becomes a chargeback; a $300 "not received" dispute with good tracking is declined by the rules and becomes a normal chargeback the merchant can fight with evidence.
How RDR differs from other alerts
- RDR covers Visa only and resolves automatically on your rules.
- CDRN (also Verifi) covers Visa and other cards at participating issuers, and you refund within a time window.
- Ethoca Alerts (Mastercard) notify you of confirmed fraud and customer disputes so you can stop fulfillment or refund.
Common mistakes
- Setting one blanket rule ("refund everything") instead of rules by amount and category.
- Forgetting to also cancel shipment or subscription when RDR refunds an order that has not shipped.
- Not reconciling RDR credits with your store, so the customer is refunded twice.
How Verdikx helps
Verdikx is a fraud, chargeback and dispute platform for e-commerce and SaaS merchants, made by Verdikx LLC. Visa RDR alerts in Verdikx are coming soon; they are not live yet. Today, Verdikx's pre-dispute prevention on Growth and Pro handles Stripe early fraud warnings, with optional automatic refunds that run only inside limits you set. When card-network alerts launch, they will appear in the same Prevention inbox. See chargeback prevention.
Frequently asked questions
Does RDR count as a chargeback?
No. Verifi's RDR FAQ states that RDR disputes and pre-disputes do not count against the dispute ratio. The case is resolved with a credit before a chargeback is created, so you also avoid the chargeback fee, though you lose the sale.
Who runs Visa RDR?
Verifi, a Visa company, operates RDR on the Visa network. Merchants usually enroll directly with Verifi or through a reseller or chargeback-management provider, and set the rules that decide which cases are refunded.
What happens to a dispute that doesn't match my RDR rules?
Verifi says it is declined with status code 957 and the issuer can continue with a regular chargeback. You then respond with evidence through your processor as usual, so keep your rules narrow enough that winnable cases still reach you.
Does RDR work for Mastercard or Amex?
No. RDR is a Visa service and only resolves Visa disputes. For other cards, merchants look at Verifi CDRN, which covers Visa and non-Visa cards at participating issuers, and Mastercard's Ethoca Alerts, which notify you so you can stop or refund.
Does Verdikx support RDR?
Not yet. Visa RDR, CDRN and Mastercard Ethoca alerts are planned for Verdikx but not available yet. Stripe early fraud warnings with optional automatic refunds are live on Growth and Pro today.
