Adyen disputes
received by webhook, defended from the case

Adyen disputes move from request for information to notification of chargeback, chargeback and possibly a second chargeback; you defend by choosing a defense reason and supplying documents. Verdikx connects Adyen (beta, Growth or Pro) with an API credential and a webhook, receives disputes as Adyen notifies them, and submits your defense from the case.

How Adyen disputes work

Adyen describes a dispute in stages:

  1. Request for information (RFI): the issuer asks for more information about the transaction. No money is withdrawn at this stage.
  2. Notification of chargeback (NoC): a chargeback has been initiated and can be defended. The NoC marks the start of the defense period; it can follow an RFI or come straight after the payment settles.
  3. Chargeback: the disputed amount is withdrawn from your account, and a chargeback processing fee is debited.
  4. Second chargeback: happens when the issuer declines your defense, when a pre-arbitration case is accepted, or when scheme arbitration rules for the issuer. If the scheme rules for the issuer, Adyen says a fee of up to USD 600 can be added.

To defend, Adyen's Disputes API retrieves the defense reasons that apply to the dispute and the documents each one needs, accepts defense documents (JPG, TIFF or PDF), and then defends the dispute with the reason you chose. Adyen has no endpoint to list disputes: you learn about them from webhooks such as REQUEST_FOR_INFORMATION and NOTIFICATION_OF_CHARGEBACK.

What Verdikx connects

Verdikx is a fraud, chargeback and dispute platform for e-commerce and SaaS merchants, built by Verdikx LLC (New Jersey, United States). The Adyen connection is in beta: fully built and supported, and we work closely with every merchant who connects it.

  • API credential and webhook. Verdikx uses an API key for a web service user with the Disputes role, plus a Standard webhook you add in Adyen, verified with its HMAC key.
  • Disputes as Adyen notifies them. Because Adyen has no API to list disputes, only disputes Adyen notifies after the webhook is set up appear in Verdikx. Earlier disputes stay in Adyen's Customer Area.
  • Defense from the case. Choose a defense reason on the case, then submit. The reviewed response and PDF packet (up to 2 MB) go to Adyen. Verdikx never accepts a dispute for you.
  • Autopilot prepares, you submit. Autopilot prepares Adyen cases and alerts you; it does not auto-submit them, so you choose the defense reason and submit.

Plan and requirements

Adyen disputes are included with Growth ($79/month) and Pro ($199/month), each with a 7-day trial. Shopify stores install the Verdikx app; merchants not on Shopify create a workspace on verdikx.com, pay by card and connect Adyen from Connections.

Good to know

  • Disputes notified before you add the webhook are not imported.
  • The packet limit for Adyen is 2 MB, smaller than most processors, so keep uploads compact.
  • Adyen's defense windows depend on the card scheme and stage; check each dispute.
  • Outcomes are decided by the issuer and the scheme; Verdikx does not guarantee wins.

Picking a defense reason

Match the reason to what your evidence proves. For a fraud dispute with prior undisputed orders from the same customer, a compelling-evidence reason fits; for goods not received, proof of delivery; for credit not processed, the refund or return record. Verdikx's playbooks show which evidence is available, partial or missing for each case.

Frequently asked questions

What is an Adyen notification of chargeback?

It is Adyen's signal that a chargeback has been initiated and can be defended, and it marks the start of the defense period. It can follow a request for information or arrive right after the payment settles. Verdikx creates a case when Adyen sends it to your webhook.

Why don't my older Adyen disputes appear in Verdikx?

Adyen has no API to list disputes, so Verdikx only sees disputes Adyen notifies to the webhook after you set it up. Handle earlier open disputes in Adyen's Customer Area; new ones will arrive in Verdikx automatically.

What is an Adyen defense reason?

It is the code you defend a dispute with, and Adyen tells you which reasons apply to each dispute and which documents each requires. In Verdikx you choose the defense reason on the case before submitting, so the evidence matches the argument.

Does Autopilot submit Adyen disputes automatically?

No. Autopilot prepares Adyen cases and alerts you, but you choose the defense reason and submit. Auto-submission is available for Stripe, Braintree and Checkout.com cases inside the limits you set.

What happens if I lose an Adyen second chargeback in arbitration?

If the card scheme rules in favor of the issuer at arbitration, Adyen says you can incur a fee of up to USD 600, added to the second chargeback. Escalate only when your evidence is strong and new.
