What American Express A01 means
The authorization approval was for less than the amount you submitted. Amex's guide calls out added charges or fees after approval, and industry tolerances: lodging and vehicle rental charges more than 15% above the approval, and restaurant charges more than 30% above it, need an additional approval.
Common causes
- Shipping, tax or an upsell added to the order total after the card was authorized
- Manual order edits in the store admin that raised the captured amount above the original authorization
- Restaurant tips that push the total more than 30% above the approved amount
- Lodging, cruise or rental totals that exceed the approval by more than 15% with no incremental authorization
Evidence that answers it
- Authorization record showing an approval for the full amount actually charged
- Any incremental or additional authorization obtained before capture
- Proof of an offsetting credit for the excess, with date and amount
- For estimated-amount industries, documentation that the estimate followed Amex requirements
How to prevent it
- Re-authorize whenever the final amount rises above the original approval
- Lock order totals before authorization, or capture only up to the approved amount and bill extras separately with consent
- For lodging and rentals, authorize the realistic estimated total (rate, nights or days, taxes, known incidentals)
Time limits and caveats
Amex gives merchants 20 days to respond. Product or delivery arguments do not help on an authorization code; the authorization log is the whole case.
How Verdikx helps with A01
Verdikx's authorization playbook tells you this is a technical dispute and asks for the processor's approval record for the charged amount. It attaches the order's payment and authorization details your processor shares, and the AI draft states the approval clearly for you to review before submitting.
Frequently asked questions
What does American Express reason code A01 mean?
Amex A01 means you submitted a charge for more than the amount American Express approved. It usually happens when fees, tips or extra items are added after authorization without a new approval. You can reverse it with proof of an approval covering the full amount, or proof you already issued an offsetting credit.
Is American Express A01 worth fighting?
Our reference rates A01 (Charge Amount Exceeds Authorization Amount) sometimes winnable, depending on the evidence you have. The evidence that answers it starts with authorization record showing an approval for the full amount actually charged. The cardholder's bank decides the outcome.
How long does a cardholder have to file a American Express A01 chargeback?
Usually 120 days from the transaction date, under the network's issuer time limits for most codes. Your processor gives you far less time to respond, so work from the due date on the case.
