What American Express C04 means
The Card Member claims a return or refusal entitles them to a credit that has not appeared. Amex lists confusion about the return policy and billing before the credit posted as common causes.
Common causes
- Return shipped back but not yet processed in the warehouse
- Return sent outside the return window or without an RMA
- Customer refused delivery and expects a refund before the parcel is back
- Customer claims a return that never reached you
Evidence that answers it
- Return records showing no return was received, or that it arrived outside the window
- Your return policy plus how it was disclosed at checkout and accepted
- For refused goods, proof they were accepted: signed delivery slip or service usage logs
- Refund record if a credit was already issued
How to prevent it
- Process return credits as soon as the item is received or the refusal is confirmed
- Print or display the return and refund policy at checkout and on receipts
- Use trackable return labels so you can show what came back and when

Is American Express C04 worth fighting?
Our reference rates C04 (Goods/Services Returned or Refused) sometimes winnable, depending on the evidence you have. The evidence that answers it starts with return records showing no return was received, or that it arrived outside the window. The cardholder's bank decides the outcome.
How long does a cardholder have to file a American Express C04 chargeback?
Usually 120 days from the transaction date, under the network's issuer time limits for most codes. Your processor gives you far less time to respond, so work from the due date on the case.
