What American Express C14 means

The Card Member shows proof of a different payment (cash, another card, a third party or insurance) for the same purchase. Amex lists card-on-file billing instead of the method offered at the time as a common cause.

Common causes

  • Customer paid by bank transfer or another card and the stored Amex card was also charged
  • Split payment where one leg was captured twice
  • Customer expected a third party (insurer, employer, another guest) to pay

Evidence that answers it

  • Payment records showing only one payment for this order, or that the other payment covered a different order
  • Proof the Card Member agreed to use the Amex card for this charge
  • Refund record if the duplicate was credited

How to prevent it

  • Reconcile all payments against an order before charging a card on file
  • Void the card charge immediately if the customer switches payment method
  • Get written consent before charging a stored card for balances

How Verdikx helps with C14

Verdikx's paid-by-other-means playbook asks for the order's single payment record and any separate orders, pulled from Shopify or your connected processor. If a second payment really exists, it tells you to refund rather than contest. You review the AI draft before it is sent.
