What American Express P08 means

Two or more charges look alike (same date, amount or descriptor), and the Card Member says only one is valid.

Common causes

  • Customer resubmitted checkout after an error page and both payments captured
  • Duplicate batch or settlement file
  • Two similar orders placed on purpose that the customer forgot
  • Monthly subscription charges mistaken for a duplicate

Evidence that answers it

  • Separate order numbers, contents and fulfillments for each charge
  • Delivery proof for each shipment
  • Subscription records showing each charge is a different billing period
  • Refund record for any real duplicate

How to prevent it

  • Use idempotency keys so retries cannot double-charge
  • Check whether a failed payment actually captured before charging again
  • Refund real duplicates immediately

How Verdikx helps with P08

Verdikx's duplicate playbook ties each charge to its own order and fulfillment, and for subscriptions uses billing history from Recharge, Skio, Bold, Recurly or Chargebee (beta). If the charge is a true duplicate, the playbook tells you to refund instead. You review the draft.
