Frequently asked questions
What does American Express reason code P04 mean?
Amex P04 is the reverse of P03: the Card Member, or the issuer, says a transaction you submitted as a credit should have been a charge. It is rare in e-commerce. Win with proof that the credit was submitted correctly, or proof that a charge directly offsetting the credit has already been processed.
Is American Express P04 worth fighting?
Our reference rates P04 (Charge Processed as Credit) sometimes winnable, depending on the evidence you have. The evidence that answers it starts with records showing the credit was intended (refund request, return receipt). The cardholder's bank decides the outcome.
How long does a cardholder have to file a American Express P04 chargeback?
Usually 120 days from the transaction date, under the network's issuer time limits for most codes. Your processor gives you far less time to respond, so work from the due date on the case.
