What Discover UA02 means
Discover's main online fraud code. AVS is required only for domestic US transactions, per Chase's guide.
Common causes
- Stolen card details used online
- Orders shipped to an address that did not match AVS
- CID not collected or not checked
- Friendly fraud by the real cardholder
Evidence that answers it
- AVS result validating the street address and ZIP code
- CID submitted in the authorization request
- Proof of delivery to the AVS-verified street address
- Transaction documentation with authorization code and item descriptions
- Compelling evidence: customer emails, earlier undisputed orders with the same details, download logs for digital goods
How to prevent it
- Collect CID and run AVS on every order
- Hold or review orders shipping to an address that failed AVS
- Answer every Discover ticket retrieval request quickly
Time limits and caveats
Without AVS and CID data on the original authorization, most processors cannot represent a UA02.

What does Discover reason code UA02 mean?
Discover UA02 means the cardholder claims a card-not-present purchase was fraudulent, or the issuer found possible fraud because AVS or CID was not verified. Chase's guide says representment needs all three: positive AVS, a CID check, and proof of delivery to the AVS-verified street address. An unanswered retrieval request removes representment rights.
Is Discover UA02 worth fighting?
Our reference rates UA02 (Fraud - Card Not Present Transaction) sometimes winnable, depending on the evidence you have. The evidence that answers it starts with aVS result validating the street address and ZIP code. The cardholder's bank decides the outcome.
How long does a cardholder have to file a Discover UA02 chargeback?
Usually 120 days from the transaction date, under the network's issuer time limits for most codes. Your processor gives you far less time to respond, so work from the due date on the case.
