What Mastercard 4808 means
Mastercard's single authorization-related chargeback. It covers required authorization not obtained, an expired chargeback protection period on an account not in good standing, offline or refund transactions presented late, improper stand-in or X-code approvals after a decline, CAT 3 devices and transit first-ride risk.
Common causes
- Capturing more than seven days after a final authorization, or more than 30 days after a preauthorization
- Processing a refund more than five days after it was agreed
- Forcing through a transaction that was declined
- Capturing without any authorization
Evidence that answers it
- Processor record of an approved authorization matching the clearing record
- Proof that one authorization legitimately covered several clearing records (split shipments)
- Proof the chargeback protection period had not expired at presentment
- Proof the issuer approved after previously declining
- Proof of a refund issued before the chargeback
How to prevent it
- Capture within the authorization protection period, or reauthorize first
- Process refunds within days of agreeing to them
- Never resubmit a declined authorization without a fresh approval
Time limits and caveats
Issuer time frame: generally within 90 days of the settlement or Central Site Business Date (120 days for some European ATM and Maestro transactions). Second presentment within 45 days. Pre-arbitration is optional for 4808; the issuer can go straight to arbitration.
How Verdikx helps with 4808
Verdikx's authorization playbook for 4808 asks for the approved authorization (code, date, amount) that covers the charge, and warns that product or delivery arguments do not help. If your processor's record shows a valid, timely approval, the AI draft cites it for your review; if not, accept.
Frequently asked questions
What does Mastercard reason code 4808 mean?
Mastercard 4808 means the issuer says the transaction was not properly authorized: no authorization when one was required, presentment after the authorization's protection period, or a stand-in approval after a decline. It absorbs legacy 4807 and 4812. Win only with processor records proving a valid, timely authorization.
Is Mastercard 4808 worth fighting?
Our reference rates 4808 (Authorization-Related Chargeback) usually one to accept: a response rarely changes the outcome. The evidence that answers it starts with processor record of an approved authorization matching the clearing record. The cardholder's bank decides the outcome.
How long does a cardholder have to file a Mastercard 4808 chargeback?
Usually 90 days from the transaction date, under the network's issuer time limits. Your processor gives you far less time to respond, so work from the due date on the case.
