Visa reason code 10.5:
Visa Fraud Monitoring Program

Visa 10.5 lets the issuer charge back a fraudulent transaction that Visa's fraud monitoring identified at a merchant with excessive fraud, when no other condition succeeded. There is no evidence-based defense; the only remedies are an earlier accepted dispute or a refund. Accept these and fix the fraud problem behind them.

What Visa 10.5 means

Visa notified the issuer that the transaction was identified through its fraud monitoring of your business, and the issuer has not successfully disputed it under another condition. It signals your fraud levels breached Visa thresholds.

Common causes

  • Sustained card-testing or stolen-card attacks on checkout
  • Fraud rates above Visa's monitoring thresholds for several months
  • Weak screening on high-risk products such as gift cards or electronics
  • No 3-D Secure on risky traffic

Evidence that answers it

  • Details of a previous dispute on the same transaction that you already accepted
  • Proof of a credit or reversal with date and amount
  • A cardholder letter or email withdrawing the dispute

How to prevent it

  • Monitor your fraud and dispute ratios monthly, not only when your acquirer calls
  • Block card-testing patterns (many small authorizations, rotating cards)
  • Screen orders and require 3-D Secure where risk is high
  • Agree a remediation plan with your acquirer early

Time limits and caveats

Allocation workflow. Time limit: 120 calendar days from the date of the Visa fraud monitoring report. It is the one Visa condition an issuer may use on a transaction already disputed once. Visa consolidated its merchant monitoring into the Visa Acquirer Monitoring Program (VAMP) in 2025; the April 2026 rules still name this condition the Visa Fraud Monitoring Program, so check with your acquirer how it is applied to you.

How Verdikx helps with 10.5

Verdikx maps 10.5 to its fraud playbook and notes that Compelling Evidence 3.0 does not apply. The useful work is upstream: order screening with plain-English risk reasons, blocklists and Verdikx Network history on new Shopify orders, plus Stripe early fraud warnings with auto-refund policies (Growth and Pro), help bring fraud levels down.
