What Visa 12.4 means

The issuer claims the payment credential used to complete the transaction was incorrect, for example a keyed number with a typo or a transaction posted to a different account.

Common causes

  • Manual key entry errors on phone orders
  • Reusing stored card numbers against the wrong customer profile
  • Processing without an authorization, so an invalid number was never caught

Evidence that answers it

  • A copy of the receipt showing the same payment credential as the dispute
  • The authorization log, if the credential is not on the issuer's master file

How to prevent it

  • Avoid keyed entry; use hosted payment fields or tokenized cards
  • Authorize every transaction so invalid numbers are declined
  • Tie stored credentials strictly to the customer record

Time limits and caveats

Collaboration workflow. Issuer time limit: 120 calendar days from the transaction processing date.

How Verdikx helps with 12.4

Verdikx treats 12.4 as a processing error; its playbook asks for the processor's transaction record and warns against arguing product or delivery facts, which do not answer this claim. If the record shows the right card and an approval, the draft cites it; if not, accepting saves time.
