What 4837 means
Mastercard's four-digit codes are its Dual Message System codes; two-digit versions such as 37 are used on the Single Message System for debit. 4837 No Cardholder Authorization means the cardholder told the issuer they did not authorize the transaction. The issuer must report it to Mastercard's Fraud and Loss Database before charging back, and an account with more than 35 fraud chargebacks, or a transaction approved after two earlier fraud chargebacks on the same card, cannot be charged back for fraud. Check this before you concede.
The evidence that answers it
- Proof the cardholder took part: correspondence with them, a 3-D Secure (Identity Check) authenticated transaction, or a registered account with earlier undisputed purchases from the same device and IP address.
- The authorization date and code, and a description of the goods.
- Shipping to a matching address alone usually is not enough.
The issuer can charge back within 120 days of the transaction's Central Site Business Date, and your acquirer generally has 45 days for a second presentment; your processor's due date comes first.
If the notice says Visa
Visa replaced its old two-digit reason codes (such as 30 or 83) with Visa Claims Resolution conditions in 2018. If you still see one, ask your processor which current condition applies, then use that code's page. The reason code lookup searches every code by number or name.
Reason codes this answer covers

- Visa 10.4: Other Fraud: Card-Absent Environment: sometimes winnable
