What the label means
Stripe and Shopify Payments show subscription_canceled for disputes filed as a cancelled recurring transaction: Visa 13.2, Mastercard 4853 (cancelled recurring charges are now one of its sub-reasons), American Express C28 or Discover AP. Visa 13.2 covers a recurring charge processed after the cardholder withdrew permission. Its rules make it invalid for cardholder-initiated transactions and for claims that the charge was fraud, and since 18 April 2026 also when the cancellation came after the transaction date.
What to send
- The order record showing one purchase placed by the customer, with no recurring billing.
- The receipt and order confirmation.
- Customer messages: any request to cancel, its date and your reply; a refund already issued, with its date and amount.
- If the customer really meant they cancelled the order, the case looks more like Visa 13.7: see chargeback on a cancelled order.
Example: a candle store's "subscription"
A candle store gets a subscription_canceled dispute on a single $42 order from June, though it has never billed anyone on a schedule. The response states that the transaction was a one-time purchase the cardholder placed, attaches the order record and receipt, and notes that the customer never asked to cancel before the order shipped. The bank still decides, but the response shows the reason doesn't match the transaction.

More questions
Can a bank file a subscription chargeback on a one-time purchase?
It can be filed, but it may not fit. Visa's rules treat 13.2 as invalid for cardholder-initiated transactions, so showing that the charge was a single purchase the customer placed answers the condition itself. The issuer still decides, so attach the records rather than just stating it.
Does a mislabelled chargeback still count toward my ratio?
Yes. Card network programs count disputes when they arrive, not when they are decided, so a dispute filed under the wrong reason still counts, even if you win it.
