Historically, 12.1 meant the transaction was submitted to Visa after the required processing time limit and the account was not in good standing on the processing date.
Common causes
- Batches held for days before settlement
- Offline transactions uploaded long after the sale
- System outages that delayed settlement files

- Proof of a credit or reversal
How to prevent it
- Settle the same day or within your merchant agreement's limit
- Alert on batches that fail to settle
Time limits and caveats
Legacy condition. If a processor still labels a new case 12.1, ask whether it is actually 11.3. Older cases are typically past every response window.
How Verdikx helps with 12.1
Verdikx still recognizes the 12.1 label from older notices and maps it to its processing-error playbook, which asks for processor records of the transaction date. New late-presentment cases arrive as 11.3 and use the authorization playbook instead.
Frequently asked questions
What does Visa reason code 12.1 mean?
Visa 12.1 Late Presentment is retired for new transactions. Visa's merchant guidelines show it effective through 12 April 2024, and the April 2026 Visa Rules no longer list it. Late presentment on transactions completed on or after 13 April 2024 is disputed under 11.3 No Authorization/Late Presentment instead.
Is Visa 12.1 worth fighting?
Our reference rates 12.1 (Late Presentment) usually one to accept: a response rarely changes the outcome. The evidence that answers it starts with receipt or settlement records showing the transaction was presented on time. The cardholder's bank decides the outcome.
