Common forms
- Empty box or wrong item: the package that comes back is lighter than the items, or holds something else.
- Wardrobing: an item is used, then returned as if new.
- Reused or mismatched tracking: the return tracking number matches the outbound label or was already used on another return.
- Return after a chargeback: the customer disputes the charge and also sends a return.
How to spot it before you refund
- Compare the return package's weight, from the carrier scan or your inspection, with the expected weight of the items.
- Check the return tracking against the outbound label and earlier returns.
- Look at the customer's return rate, returns per 90 days and how long they kept high-value items.
- Inspect the item before refunding when the signals point to a problem.
How Verdikx helps
On Growth and Pro, every Shopify or Loop (beta) return request gets an Approve, Review or Decline suggested recommendation with its reasons, including weight and tracking checks, serial returning, short keep times and chargeback history. Verdikx never approves, declines or refunds a return on its own. If a customer later files a credit-not-processed chargeback, the return record flows into the dispute packet. See return fraud detection and refund abuse.
