Prevention and protection

Is a chargeback app worth it for a small store?

It depends on how many disputes you get and what your time is worth. One lost chargeback costs the sale, the product and a fee, and at low volume one dispute moves your ratio a lot. If you get a few a year and have time to answer them well, doing it yourself can be enough.

How to decide whether you need a chargeback app

  1. Count last year's disputesFrom every processor, with their reason codes.
  2. Add up what they costAmounts, goods, shipping and fees, with the chargeback fee calculator.
  3. Time one responseGathering evidence and writing the letter, start to finish.
  4. Compare the pricing modelsA share of what's won back, or a flat monthly price: see success fee vs subscription.
  5. Try it on real disputesUse a free trial on cases you actually have.

The costs to compare

  • A lost dispute: the order amount, the goods and shipping, and a fee. Shopify Payments charges $15 in the United States; Stripe charges a $15 dispute fee plus a $15 counter fee that is returned if you win.
  • Your time: gathering the evidence and writing the response, usually within 7 to 21 days.
  • The app: a flat monthly price or a share of what you win back. A success fee grows as you win more; a flat price doesn't.

Questions to ask any app

  • Does it import disputes from your processors automatically?
  • Does it save evidence when the order is placed, not after the dispute?
  • Do you review what's submitted before it goes?
  • Does it screen orders before they ship?
  • Is the price flat or a percentage, and is there a free trial?

Example: 2 disputes a month

A store with 300 orders a month gets 2 disputes, about $60 each. Losing both costs $150 with the fees, plus the goods. A $29 app that drafts both responses with AI and keeps the evidence ready is weighed against the time two responses take and the risk of losing either. A store with one dispute a year can reasonably answer it by hand with the free rebuttal letter templates.

Where Verdikx fits

Verdikx is a flat subscription with no cut of what you win back. Starter is $29 a month and covers AI drafts and the AI claim check for 10 cases a month; every plan has a 7-day free trial. See pricing.

More questions

Can I handle chargebacks without an app?

Yes. Shopify Payments lets you respond in Shopify admin and Stripe in its Dashboard. You need the evidence for the reason code, a short rebuttal letter and the deadline; free rebuttal templates and a time limit calculator cover the letter and the dates.

Do chargeback apps take a percentage of what they win?

Some do: success-fee apps charge a share of what they recover, while others charge a flat subscription. Verdikx is flat, with no cut of what you win back. Compare both on your own numbers with the success fee vs subscription calculator.
