Prevention and protection

What is chargeback mitigation?

Chargeback mitigation is everything a merchant does to cut what disputes cost. It means preventing the avoidable chargebacks, answering the winnable ones with evidence that fits the reason code and accepting the unwinnable ones quickly, and it is measured by your chargeback ratio and your losses.

How to set up chargeback mitigation

  1. MeasureYour ratio per processor and your top reason codes, with the chargeback ratio calculator.
  2. Prevent the top causeScreening for fraud codes, tracking emails for not-received, clearer product pages for not-as-described.
  3. Triage every disputeFight, accept or refund: the fight or accept tool shows which.
  4. Answer with matched evidenceEvidence chosen for the reason code, submitted before the processor's deadline.
  5. Review losses monthlyFind what each lost case lacked and fix it for the next one.

The three parts

  1. Prevent: screening before you ship, a recognizable descriptor, receipts and tracking emails, easy refunds, and acting on early fraud warnings.
  2. Respond: representment with evidence matched to the code, submitted before the deadline.
  3. Accept and learn: accept what can't be won, refund what's owed, and fix the cause behind each loss.

Mitigation, management and prevention

Prevention stops disputes from being filed. Management is the workflow for the ones that are: deadlines, evidence and responses. Mitigation covers both and is judged by results: fewer disputes, fewer losses, a lower ratio. Card networks count disputes when they arrive, won or lost, so prevention does more for your ratio than winning does.

Example: 40 disputes a month

A store with 40 disputes a month accepts 6 duplicate-charge and refund-owed cases on day one, answers the winnable ones with evidence matched to each code, and adds order screening to cut the stolen-card orders behind most of the rest. Its losses fall from both ends: fewer cases, and fewer responses that couldn't win.

More questions

Is chargeback mitigation the same as chargeback management?

Not quite. Chargeback management is the work of handling disputes once they are filed: deadlines, evidence and responses. Mitigation includes that and the prevention before it, so a mitigation plan also covers screening, descriptors and refunds.

Does winning more chargebacks lower my ratio?

No. Card networks count disputes when they arrive, so won disputes still count. Winning recovers the money; only preventing disputes lowers the ratio.
