What a lost chargeback costs
- The amount. It was debited when the chargeback arrived, and it isn't returned.
- The fee. Shopify Payments returns its fee ($15 in the United States) only if you win. Stripe's dispute fee is non-refundable for businesses outside Mexico, and its separate countered fee comes back only on a win.
- The goods and shipping you already sent, and the time spent on the response.
The chargeback fee calculator adds these up for a month of disputes.
Can you take it further?
Usually not on your own. Shopify says there is no appeal once you lose a Shopify Payments chargeback, and Stripe doesn't support the arbitration phase. PayPal's dispute lifecycle lists pre-arbitration as the merchant's first appeal of a decision. On Visa and Mastercard, later stages run between the banks and the network, and Adyen says losing arbitration can add a fee of up to USD 600. See can you appeal a chargeback you lost.
What to do next
- Find out why. The most useful question is whether the evidence matched the reason code: delivery proof answers "not received", not a fraud claim (why chargebacks are lost despite proof of delivery).
- Remember it still counts. Networks count disputes when they arrive, won or lost, so the chargeback ratio is what to watch.
- Decide about the customer. After a confirmed, deliberate case, blocking future orders protects you from a repeat.
