What comes back
- The disputed amount, once the issuer decides in your favour. Stripe says issuers typically take 60 to 75 days to decide; Shopify says the review can take up to 75 days.
- Fees: Shopify Payments returns the disputed amount and its chargeback fee if you win. At Stripe, the dispute countered fee you paid to respond is returned, while the dispute fee itself is non-refundable for businesses outside Mexico.
Is a win final?
Not always. On Visa consumer disputes, the issuer can make a pre-arbitration attempt within 30 days of your response, but only with new information, a valid change of condition, or certification that the cardholder reviewed your evidence and still disputes. On Mastercard, Adyen says pre-arbitration can be filed within 45 days and applies to most reason codes. Stripe doesn't support arbitration, so Stripe disputes end at the issuer's decision. See pre-arbitration.
It still counts toward your ratio
Card network monitoring programs count disputes when they arrive, not when they are decided, so a won chargeback still counts. That is why prevention matters as much as winning. Check where you stand with the chargeback ratio calculator.
